Dr. Mitchell Schuster has three grown children, two of whom are married, and two grandchildren. Because of family, his favorite times are the gatherings of Christmas and Easter. Though he is trying to watch his waistline, the family favorite meal for those holidays includes marinated fillets. Using an old marinade recipe that includes R.C. Cola, the grilled beef fillets melt in the mouth.

Dr. Schuster left the business world for medicine when he and his wife were unable to conceive in the early 1980’s. The frustration level of being an unfulfilled patient-couple led he and his wife to UAB to do research in infertility which subsequently led them to the world of urogynecology and three adopted children.

He spends a lot of time with family and a lot of time playing music. He has been playing since he was a teenager. Playing jazz for Auburn University as a college student, He continued to play in bluegrass bands through the early married years and continues playing routinely for his church. His oldest son is also gifted in music and family times often revolve around music but grandchildren are gently taking over those times.

Growing up on a farm and spending time on tractors influenced his life because he still spends a lot of time caring for the yard at his home. He is using that excuse for new 4-wheelers to haul the grandkids with.

Medically, he is excited by opportunities of helping women with quality-of-life improvement.  Hearing stories from patients who have had life changing operations or medical management outcomes that have improved their urine or fecal incontinence issues helps him remember why he left the business world.

But the business world has not left him. Quality medicine is now measured in terms of value. Dr. Schuster spends a large amount of time working nationally for the American Urogynecologic Society, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The Society of Gynecologic Surgeons, and The American College of Surgeons assisting with coding and valuation of services for the physicians in those groups. He meets quarterly with governmental agencies and Medicare as the representative physician for those groups to assure proper physician reimbursement.
